A two-story brick building, resembling an I-house. It served as both a school and as the meeting place of Eureka Masonic Lodge No. 61 (which was chartered in 1844). This building is regarded as the birthplace of the Order of the Eastern Star (a Masonic affiliate organization), because it was here that Rob Morris, while teaching at the school, developed the idea of the organization. It was later used as a public school. It is now owned by the OES.
The building received a preservation grant through MDAH in 1983 (under the Emergency Jobs Bill of 1983).
It is included in "Must See Mississippi" (2007) (pp.58-61) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p.90, YB38). |
