Important to the study of black history in Jackson, the Alex Williams House is probably the only Colonial Revival-style building constructed by George Thomas, a self-taught black contractor well-known for his bungalow-style residences in the community. The size of the two-story building and its formalism set it apart from its neighbors, small vernacular cottages or dwellings designed in the bungalow style. The house was individually listed on the National Register on 3 July 1979. It was later included as element of the Farish Street Neighborhood Historic District Amendment Area, which was placed on the National Register on 8 October 1980. It is included in "Jackson Landmarks" (1982) (p. 153) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (pp. 252-253, JM37). |
