The most imposing public building in the state, this is a very large, three-story stone-clad building, loosely modeled after the United States Capitol. The building is dominated by an elegant monumental portico and a massive colonnaded dome. A major restoration was begun in 1979 and completed about 1982. The Mississippi State Capitol was listed on the National Register on 25 November 1969, and was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 5 March 1986. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on 31 October 2016.
