The Houston Historic District represents the traditional core of the City of Houston and contains 83 resources of which 71 (86%) are contributing and 12 (14%) are non-contributing. Streets run on a grid. Principal north to south streets include Monroe, Jefferson, Jackson, Huddleston, and Pontotoc Streets. Principal east to west streets include Depot, Hamilton, Washington, Madison, and Pittsboro Streets. Of the contributing resources in the district, twenty-nine are commercial buildings, twenty-two of which were used for retail spaces, one as a bank, and one as a restaurant, and five as office buildings. The other contributing resources include twenty-eight residences, the Chickasaw County Courthouse, the Carnegie Library, the United States Post Office, the Mobile and Ohio Railroad Depot, a motel, a motion picture theatre, two manufacturing facilities, and three warehouses.
