"Ravenna" is one of the most architecturally significant early Greek Revival mansions in Natchez. This significance is based upon its well-documented construction, its high degree of architectural finish, and the uniqueness of its architectural form in Natchez. Ravenna was constructed in 1835-36 as the residence of William Harris, a commission merchant, real estate developer, planter, and Natchez alderman. This house was individually listed on the National Register on 4 November 1982, and it was later included as element #81 in the Downriver Residential Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 25 March 1999. It is included in "The Majesty of Natchez" (1969/1981/1986) (pp. 46-47), "Old Homes of Mississippi, Volume I: Natchez and the South" (1977) (pp. 61-62), "The Great Houses of Natchez" (1986) (pp. 92-94), "Architecture of the Old South: Mississippi - Alabama" (1989), "Classic Natchez" (1996) (pp. 29, 92-93), and "Louisiana Architecture 1820-1840" (2005) (p. 233). |
