Context/Comments
The Hinds County Courthouse in Jackson is an excellent example of Art Deco style art and architecture. It is the seat of government of Hinds County and its location can be related to the original Thomas Jefferson-inspired plan for Jackson. At the time of construction, it was considered a model facility. The adjacent Hinds County Detention Center, which now blocks the south facade of the courthouse, was erected in 1977. The courthouse was enlarged by the addition of wings at either side in 1987-88. The statues on the roof, of Moses and Socrates, made by Fred M. Torrey of Chicago, were recorded by the Save Outdoor Sculpture! project [SOS-HIN-001 and 002].

The courthouse was listed on the National Register on 13 July 1986. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 5 March 1986.

This building is included in "Jackson Landmarks" (1982) (pp. 64-65) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 249, at the end of the listing for the Jackson City Hall, JM31).
