Overstreet, Noah Webster (b.1888 - d.1973) |
Architect, Jackson, MS |
Born in Eastabutchie, Jones Co., and graduated from Mississippi A&M in 1908 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. While at A&M, he worked a summer in the office of R.H. HUNT, who at that time had several projects at the Mississippi campus. Overstreet continued his education at the University of Illinois at Urbana, graduating in 1910 with a B.S. in architectural engineering. From 1910-1912, he worked as an architectural designer and engineer in Urbana at the firm of Joseph W. Royer, and he met his future wife, Mabel Kennear in Urbana. He moved to Jackson, MS, in 1912, establishing the firm OVERSTREET & SPENCER, with RAYMOND B. SPENCER (he also may have worked on a few projects during this time as OVERSTREET, SPENCER, & PAINE), and continued in partnership with Spencer until 1915, when he began practicing independently. In the 1916 Jackson City Directory, his offices are listed at the Merchants Bank & Trust Building (SW corner of Capitol and State), in 1922, his offices were at the Midway Building (201 E. Capitol), and in 1927/28, he is listed at the Mississippi Fire Building (401-5 E. Mississippi). Listed in "Directory of American Architects," Southern Architect and Building News (Apr 1920), p. 47. He set up a field office in Gulfport in late 1916 to deal with the courthouse project and the Centennial Exhibition project, of which he was the chief architect. At this time, he placed C. SEDGWICK MOSS in charge of his branch office there. JAMES M. SPAIN was a draftman in his office, 1921-1923. Overstreet submitted a proposal for the Natchez City Hall in 1925, but the project was awarded to Jackson architect H.N. AUSTIN. Overstreet was a member of the Louisiana chapter of the AIA in the early 1920s, before the creation of the MS chapter in 1929. He was the first president of the fledgling MS Chapter, serving from 1929-1936. WILLIAM E. CAMPBELL was in his office in the late 1920s, and R.W. NAEF worked for him from 1923 to 1928 as engineer and specification writer and office manager. POWELL S. HALL worked off and on from 1926-1935, as Designer, Chief Draftsman, and Structural Engineer. EDWARD WELTY was a draftsman in 1929 and again 1941-1942. HAROLD KAPLAN worked in his office as a draftsman, 1931-32. Overstreet participated in a traveling exhibit by the state board of development in 1930, with his entry titled "Creating a Homelike Atmosphere in Apartments." In 1931, he established a partnership with A. HAYS TOWN as OVERSTREET & TOWN, which lasted until 1939. After this dissolution, Overstreet established the firm N.W. OVERSTREET & ASSOCIATES, beginning in 1939, with associates E.E. NORWOOD, ROBERT K. OVERSTREET (son), W. L. BROWNE, and H.H. RATHER; and succeeded in 1955, by OVERSTREET, WARE, & WARE, ending his practice with the firm OVERSTREET, WARE, WARE, & LEWIS.
In 1947, he was named to the advisory council of the Mississippi Commission on Hospital Care. Overstreet was a deacon in First Baptist Church of Jackson for several decades, and he designed a number of Baptist (as well as other) churches around the state. He also served on the board of the Flowood Corporation, which developed most of the municipality of Flowood in the 1950s. He was registered in Mississippi, Louisiana, and North Carolina. Overstreet designed at least one building in Louisiana, "Bloom's Arcade," in Tallulah, 1930-31. He became a Fellow with the AIA in 1952, nominated for his "notable and outstanding contribution to the advancement of the profession of architecture by his excellent designs as well as the educational service rendered by him to younger men." Overstreet retired from practice in 1968, at which time he claimed over 650 buildings as his design. At the end of his career, 24 of the then 42 architects working in Jackson has been employed in his office at some time. According to the AIA Fellowship application submitted by the Mississippi chapter, Overstreet was considered a "dean of architects in [the] region." Some of his records are contained in the N.W. Overstreet Architectural Records collection in Special Collections, Mitchell Memorial Library at MSU. See Story of Jackson, vol. 2, p. 152-153. See also American Architects Directory, 1962. |
