Link, Theodore Carl (b.1850 - d.1923)
Architect, St. Louis, MO
Born in Winpfen, Germany and educated at Heidelberg University, trained in architecture in London and completed studies as the École des Arts et Metiers in Paris. Moved to America in 1870, settling in St. Louis in 1873, before completing projects in Pittsburgh (Wabash Terminals) and New York. In 1876, he married Annie C. Fuller, of Detroit. From 1895-1896, he was a partner in the firm Link, Rosenheim, & (William B.) Ittner, in St. Louis. He won first prize in the competition for the St. Louis Union Station (1894) with Edward C. Cameron (with whom he was in partnership from 1891-92), and was the consulting architect for the St. Louis City Hall, architect for the Barnes Hospital at Washington University Medical School and for the Mines and Metallurgy Building and the Mississippi State Building at the St. Louis Exposition. He practiced independently from 1898 to 1910, when he briefly went into practice with his son Edwin Carl Link. He again practiced independently until forming a partnership in 1919 with WILBUR TRUEBLOOD as LINK & TRUEBLOOD. From 1920 until his death in 1923, he served as Director of Public Works for the State Bond Improvement Commission. He had established an office in Jackson, MS, after the end of WWI, and was responsible for a number of buildings at the State Sanatorium and at MSU and UM. He is listed in the 1922 Jackson City Directory with offices at 524 E. Capitol and a residence at 943 N. State Street. E.L. MALVANEY worked as a draftsman in his firm during this time, 1921-1923. From here, Link moved to Baton Rouge, LA, designing the master plan and at least nine buildings at LSU before his death. See Biographical Dictionary of American Architects (Deceased), pp. 373-374. Listed as "Theodore C. Link & Son" with offices in St. Louis in "Directory of American Architects," Southern Architect and Building News (Apr 1920), p. 47.
