Son of JOHN R. HARKNESS. Took over family business, which had previously concentrated more on contracting than on design, in 1894, after the retirement of his father. Listed as "W.R. Harkness" in the Directory of American Cement Industries and Handbook for Cement Users (1902) under the heading "Engineers, Architects and Other Supervisors of the Use of Cement" (p. 632). Listed at 1320 West R. St., Biloxi, in "Directory of Southern Architects" in Southern Architect and Building News, Vol. 32, #2 (Dec 1913), pp. 43-45.
