Born in Alabama to South Carolinian parents. Was working in Greenville in the 1890s. Probably came to Jackson around 1900, and he supervised the construction of the New Capitol, 1901-1903. By 1905 he was located at 639 N. Congress St. in Jackson. While both the 1900 census and the 1904 Jackson City Directory note his occupation as "Architect," the 1910 census lists him as "Building Contractor." Listed in Greenville in the Directory of American Cement Industries and Handbook for Cement Users (1902) under the heading "Contractors and Large Users of Cement" (p. 551). Listed with office on E. Capitol St., Jackson, in "Directory of Southern Architects" in Southern Architect and Building News, Vol. 32, #2 (Dec 1913), pp. 43-45. see also BARNES, J.F., & CO. |
