Sloan, Samuel (b.1815 - d.1884)
Architect, Philadelphia, PA
Born in Chester County, PA, and apprenticed as a carpenter as a teenager. Appointed "Superintendent of the Work" for the Dept. for the Insane building at the PA Hospital in 1838. Eventually moved to Philadelphia and by the late 1840s was advertising as an architect. His The Model Architect (1852) was a compilation of several paperback folios he had published. Formed a partnership in 1852 with John S. Stewart, this association lasting until 1858. During this time, Sloan worked on the Alabama Insane Hospital, a number of courthouses and churches, schools, and of course, residences. His practice faltered during the Civil War, when "Longwood" was left unfinished and other building came to a halt, but Sloan became active in the founding of the Pennsylvania Institute of Architects, and he also turned himself to architectural publication with The Architectural Review and American Builder's Journal. Sloan moved to North Carolina in 1883 to take advantage of the building boom there following the War, and his last important commission was the design of the governor's mansion in Raleigh. He is buried in Philadelphia.
