Biggs, Thomas Jones (b.1912 - d.1999)
Architect, Jackson, MS
Born in Earle, Arkansas, Biggs and his family had moved to Jackson by the 1920s, where he attended Central High School and also was a neighbor of R.W. NAEF. He attended college at Georgia Tech, graduating with a B.S. in Architecture in 1933. His early career, hampered by the Great Depression, was characterized by a variety of jobs in various locations. Upon graduation, he worked with A. HAYS TOWN on the first HABS documentation team in Mississippi, 1933-34. From 1934-1935, he was employed by the Emergency Relief Administration (ERA) as a "structural designer." He also worked for the Resettlement Administration office in Jackson, MS, as a construction supervisor and then in Little Rock, Ark. as a draftsman and architect from 1935-1937. From 1937-1938, he worked briefly for Horace W. Peaslee, in Washington DC and for Alan Kamstra in New York City as a draftsman and designer. He moved back to Jackson in 1938, where he got married and began working as a draftsman and designer for R.W. NAEF. While in this office, he met his future partner, HARRY WEIR, who was also a draftsman. He apparently joined the Army Corps of Engineers in 1938, and was called to active service in Nov. 1940. His duties during WWII included work on the construction of the Pentagon, area engineer for the Woodrow Wilson General Hospital in Staunton, VA, and engineer for the construction of Reading (PA) Air Field, Aberdeen Proving Ground and Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. He resigned from active duty in 1946 (remaining in the Reserves) and formed BIGGS, WEIR, & CHANDLER in Jackson with HARRY E. WEIR and Sidney Chandler (engineer) in 1946. President of the Mississippi Art Association, 1948-49. Served on Planning Commission for City of Jackson in 1950 and as president of the MS AIA in 1952. Three children by 1956, with office at 336 Meadowbrook Rd., and home at 3734 N. State St. Attended classes at MIT in 1960 and taught many architectural seminars over his years of practice, including at Tulane University and an annual workshop for architecture teachers in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Advanced to A.I.A Fellow in 1963 for his public service to the A.I.A. see BIGGS, WEIR, and BIGGS, WEIR, CHASTAIN, successor firms. See also American Architects Directory, 1956.
