Context/Comments
A two-story, side-gabled, wood-frame, double-pile Greek Revival house with a five-bay façade. Across the center three bays of the façade is a broad, unpedimented tetrastyle portico with “Temple of the Winds” fluted Corinthian columns. The house is similar in appearance to Miller Plantation House in DeSoto County (033-OLV-7001-NR).

It is included as a contributing element (element #13) in the Margin Street Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 7 April 1988, as a part of the Grenada Multiple Resource Area.

This house is included in "Old Homes of Mississippi, Volume II: Columbus and the North" (1977) (pp. 134-135, as the Whitaker Manse) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p.141, in the listing for Houses on Margin Street, NC3).

Brief Description
Two-story wood frame Greek Revival residence; side-gabled, double-piled. Temporary roof covering and wood clapboard siding. Five-bay symmetrical facade (W,W,D,W,W) with central entrance. Tetrastyle unpedimented portico covers the center three bays and is supported by fluted Corinthian columns. Entrance doors are double-leaf wood-paneled with divided sidelights over one panel and an eight-light transom. The entrance is covered by a cantilevered flat roof. Windows are 6/6 double-hung wood sash, flanked by fixed louvered wood shutters. Second-floor bays are identical to first-floor bays. Wood pilasters further frame the bays, beginning at the outside corners of the house. A temporary felt roof covering is in place while fire damage is being repaired.
Historic Information
This house was built by local builder John Moore as his home. The columns were reportedly imported from England. Before it sustained major fire damage, this was one of the most exquisitely restored and furnished homes in Grenada. The beautiful balcony was used by General Sterling Price, Commander of the Confederate Army of the West, to review his troops.
