This is the site of Fort Rosalie, a French colonial fortification originally built in 1716 to guard the settlement at Natchez. It was burned by the Natchez Indians in 1729 and was rebuilt soon afterwards. The fort was occupied by the British during their control of the Natchez District from 1763 to 1799, and by the Spanish from 1779 until the establishment of the Mississippi Territory in 1798. The site is now administered by the National Park Service as a part of the Natchez National Historical Park. Included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (pp.29-30). |
