| The old public school building at Wesson was, according to its cornerstone, "erected 1880; destroyed by fire 1890; re-built 1893." A locally important landmark, it is one of three remaining public buildings associated with the town's remarkable post-Civil War development and prosperity. The importance of the school derives from its distinctive Romanesque style and its links to the early growth of the town. It was listed on the National Register on 16 October 1980, from a nomination prepared by Norman Chronister. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 19 April 1985. In 2001 it received a Community Heritage Preservation Grant of $340,000 for exterior restoration. This building is included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 290, SC8). |
