Context/Comments
Built in 1902-03, the Copiah County Courthouse was designed by architect James Riely Gordon, who specialized in courthouses and is particularly noted for designing several prominent county courthouses in Texas. In Mississippi, he also designed the Vicksburg City Hall (1901-03) and the Wilkinson County Courthouse in Woodville(1902-03).

The courthouse was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 5 January 1984. It is included as a contributing element (element #10) in the Hazlehurst Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 5 November 1998.

The building received a 2002 Community Heritage Preservation Grant of $250,000. In August 2005 it was announced that the Copiah County Courthouse had been awarded a “Save America’s Treasures” grant of $225,000 for Federal Fiscal Year 2007.

This building is included in "James Riely Gordon: His Courthouses and Other Public Architecture" (2011) (pp.195-198,C-16) and “Buildings of Mississippi” (2020) (p.288, SC3).
