Built in 1891 as the Adams County Jail, this Queen Anne Style building of brick construction is a rare surviving example of a late 19th century jail designed to resemble a private residence in order to better blend into its surroundings. The front part of the building served as a residence for the jailer and his family. It was built by the Champion Iron Works of Kenton, Ohio, and is pictured in that firm's "Jail Catalog No. 12" (ca.1892).
This building ceased to be used as a jail after the completion of the present Adams County Jail at 306 State Street, which opened in 1978.
The Old Adams County Jail is included in "Natchez Walking Guide" (1985) (#47, p.35) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p.32). |
