Built in 1926-27, the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad Passenger Depot (also known as the Illinois Central Passenger Depot) in Clarksdale is locally significant in the area of transportation, representing the importance of rail transportation in the development of the city of Clarksdale. It served as one of the major railroad passenger hubs in the Mississippi Delta from 1927 until passenger service was discontinued in 1965. This building was individually listed on the National Register on 31 October 1995. It was later included as a "previously listed" element (element #61) in the Clarksdale Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 14 September 2009. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 21 February 1996. It is included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 121, in the listing for the Delta Blues Museum, DR37). |
