The house known as "Idlewild" is a hip-roofed Greek Revival galleried planter’s cottage that was built in the late 1840s.

It was listed on the National Register on 22 July 1979, as a component of the "Historic Resources of Port Gibson" (Port Gibson Multiple Resource Area (MRA)).

This house is included in "Shrines to Yesterday" (1968), "Historic Architecture in Mississippi" (1973) (p. 30), "Architecture in Claiborne County, Mississippi" (1974) (p. 76), and "Louisiana Architecture 1840-1860" (2006) (pp. 129-130).
