Context/Comments
Although the Congregation Gemiluth Chassed was organized in 1859, a cemetery was not established until 1870. Prior to 1870, Jewish dead from Port Gibson were buried in Natchez. This cemetery is significant as a reflection of the Jewish community in Port Gibson, and for its historic importance as one of the early Jewish cemeteries in the state after those in Natchez, Grand Gulf, Columbus, Vicksburg, and Jackson.

It was listed on the National Register on 22 July 1979, as a component of the "Historic Resources of Port Gibson" (Port Gibson Multiple Resource Area (MRA)).

It is included in "Architecture in Claiborne County, Mississippi" (1974) (p. 56).
