Wintergreen Cemetery began as the Gibson family burying place after 1800. A grandchild of Samuel Gibson was buried here in 1807. The impressive monuments, ornate family gates and fences, and curving drive create a striking visual impression and express the romantic inclinations of mid-nineteenth-century cemetery landscapes popular in the eastern United States. This cemetery was listed on the National Register on 22 July 1979, as a component of the "Historic Resources of Port Gibson" (Port Gibson Multiple Resource Area (MRA)). It is included in "Architecture in Claiborne County, Mississippi" (1974) (p. 54). |
