Built in 1913 by Dr. W. F. Rogers, the Porterville General Store retains the glass display cases and store shelving typical of small town general stores located throughout Mississippi in the early years of the 20th century. The store building also housed a bank, a post office and a doctor’s office. The addition of a canopy and gasoline pumps marked the beginning of the changes automobiles brought to small town life. This building was listed on the the National Register on 17 March 2006. The National Register nomination was written by Joyce Lampe, the property owner, and Jennifer Baughn, architectural historian, MDAH. |
