| This building was built about 1907 to serve as the public school for the Houlka community. The building originally had a third (attic) story which served as a meeting place for John N. Cain Lodge No. 259, F&AM, until 1911, when the lodge moved to the upper story of a commercial building. The school building was remodeled in 1934, at which time the attic story was removed and replaced with a truncated hip roof. The original roof configuration was replaced when the building was restored in 2003-04 using Community Heritage Preservation Grant funds. {John N. Cain Lodge No. 259, F&AM, was chartered in 1865 at Red Land and moved to Houlka in 1887.} |
