The former Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center was built in 1948-49 by the firm of Mallet & Associates of Jackson. The architect was John L. Turner. This building has state level significance in the area of architecture because it is the best example of the rare and distinctive "Nautical Moderne" style of architecture in Mississippi and it is the only surviving Naval Reserve Center of this style in the United States. The N&MCRC is also significant at the state level in the area of military history because it is Mississippi's only example of a Cold War era Naval Reserve facility. Historically, the N&MCRC is associated with the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps efforts to train and maintain Reservists for mobilization and active duty during the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf-era conflicts. This building was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 14 August 2001 and it was listed on the National Register on 19 November 2002. It received a $100,000 Mississippi Landmark Grant in 2002, for exterior restoration. |
