Mississippi Industrial College was established in 1905 as an educational institution for African Americans. Three of the four major buildings constructed during its growth period from 1905 to 1926 survive. The campus has been mostly vacant for decades and several important buildings are in a state of extreme deterioration and decay. The campus was listed on the National Register on 20 January 1980 as the Mississippi Industrial College Historic District. The college complex was designated a Mississippi Landmark, upon owner resolution, on 14 November 2002.

Mississippi Industrial College is included in "Must See Mississippi" (2007) (pp. 162-165) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (pp.149-150, in the listing for the Rust College and Mississippi Industrial College, NC16).
