Brookhaven was founded by Samuel Jayne in the year 1818 and it became a railroad terminal after 1851. The Brookhaven, Jackson & Great Northern Railroad (now Illinois Central) completed its tracks through Brookhaven in March 1858. This depot was built in 1907 and designed by Frank Chase, a prolific architect from Chicago who designed a number of depots for Illinois Central Railroad. This building was individually listed on the National Register on 21 August 1980, and it was later included as a previously-listed element (#78.2) in the Downtown Brookhaven Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 15 July 1999. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 14 December 1989. It is is included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 291, in the listing for Downtown Buildings, SC9). |
