Context/Comments
One of three surviving antebellum buildings on the campus of the University of Mississippi, Barnard is an imposing structure in the Greek Revival style. It was built under the administration of Chancellor F.A.P. Barnard to house a gigantic telescope and other fine equipment intended to make the University an unrivaled center for the study of astronomy. It has played an important role in the history of the institution, serving numerous educational functions and providing a residence for fifteen of the University's chief executives.

The building was individually listed on the National Register in 1979, and was designated a Mississippi Landmark in 1986.

Barnard Observatory is included in "The State of Mississippi – Historic Properties" (1982) (p. 14), "The Majesty of the Mississippi Delta" (2002) (p.90), and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p.156-157, NC25.5).
