The Mound Bayou Bank building, built in 1904, is the only surviving historic commercial building testifying to an active, independent community of African Americans in the Mississippi Delta during the early twentieth century. The bank operated from 1904 to 1914. After the bank was closed, the building continued to serve the community in various roles, including the post office, a credit union, a cafe, and a residence. This building was individually listed on the National Register on 1 March 1996, and it was later included as a "previously listed" element (element #49) in the Mound Bayou Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 11 September 2013. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 1 November 1995. It is mentioned in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 117). |
