Context/Comments
"On the site of Wilkins' livery stable, the Lyric opened in 1914 for stage plays and silent movies. Partially burned in 1924, it was restored for 'talkies' by R.X. Williams, husband of Wilkins' daughter. The film version of William Faulkner's Intruder in the Dust premiered here in 1949" (see Oxford Walking Tour, p. 20).
Brief Description
ca. 1885, two-story, 5-bay (w, wdw, dd, dd, w), brick masonry former
Italianate livery stables, and later, early 20th century (ca. 1914) theater
building. Gable roof with built-up asphalt behind stepped parapet with metal
coping and brick belt course. Windows are 1/1 d.h. wood replacements in
segmental-arched reveals. Entry has two pairs of multillght wood
replacements doors topped by a suspended metal marquee. Storefront altered
2007. NC for massive alterations.
