Fort St. Pierre was erected by the French in 1719 and was destroyed by Indians in 1729. The site was reoccupied in 1862 by Confederate forces, who erected batteries and fortifications, which were collectively referred to as Fort Snyder. This site was listed on the National Register on 6 February 1973, from a nomination prepared by MDAH historian William C. Wright. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on 16 February 2000. The site was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 20 April 2021. |
