Context/Comments
The Vicksburg National Military Park is an 1,869-acre national park that encompasses most of the battlefield area, including defensive lines and siege lines, of the Siege of Vickburg (18 May to 4 July 1863), which was one of the most important battles of the Civil War. The military park contains a nationally significant collection of commemorative monuments and sculpture.

The military park was established in 1899. In 1933 the property was conveyed from the War Department to the National Park Service. A portion of the military park property was transferred to the City of Vicksburg in the 1950s in exchange for the removal of city streets within the federal park boundaries. As a result, the park actually consists of two parts – the larger part that is federally-owned and managed by the National Park Service and a smaller part that is owned by the city, but interpreted by the National Park Service. There are notable military sites and commemorative monuments in both areas.

The federally-owned part of the Vicksburg National Military Park was administratively listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 15 October 1966, but a nomination document was not submitted at that time. A post-facto nomination for the property was submitted in 1976 and was formally accepted by the National Register office on 9 December 1977.

Information about the Vicksburg National Military Park is included in in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (pp.82-84, YB26) and other publications.
