An asymmetrical six-bay galleried cottage with chamfered posts on the gallery, and detached sidelights flanking the entrance; double-leaf door surmounted by a 7-light rectangular transom. One of the finest and most sophisticated structures erected during the 1820s and 1830s in southwest Mississippi, the Federal-style Thomas Batchelor House exemplifies the popularity this style enjoyed prior to the emergence of Greek Revivial in this area. This house was listed on the National Register on 27 March 1975, with 158 acres of land, from a nomination prepared by MDAH architectural historian Elizabeth Reynolds. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark, at the request of the owner, on 20 August 2019. It is included in "Old Homes of Mississippi, Volume I: Natchez and the South" (1977) (p. 20) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 26). |
