Context/Comments
This Italianate building was built in 1885 to house the St. Francis Xavier School. It served as the main educational building for St. Francis Xavier School until a newer school building was built in 1937.

This building was included as a contributing element (element #35) in the original Uptown Vicksburg Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 19 August 1993, and it was more recently included as a previously-listed element (element #37) in the Uptown Vicksburg Amendment and Boundary Increase No. 2, which was added to the National Register on 4 February 2020.

It is included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p.79, in the listing for the Historic St. Francis Xavier School and Convent, YB18).

Brief Description
A two-story brick Italianate auditorium and classroom building, facing south, with a low, metal-covered hipped roof with a widely overhanging eave and a cornice supported with heavy brackets. The center bay projects from the facade and is capped with a gable roof with cornice returns and a round-arched vent There are five bays: four tall, round-arched, six-over-six, double-hung windows with arched brick lintels with keystones and a double-leaf paneled door with an arched transom surmounted by a brick lintel with keystone.
