Context/Comments
The John Lane House four-bay wood-frame cottage on a full-story brick raised basement. It now has “pierced columns” on its double galleries. It is a distinctive example of the modest dwellings built in the Lower Mississippi Valley in the first third of the nineteenth century. It is a hall-parlor house with an undercut gallery along the full width of the façade. While not architect-designed or crafted by masters, the relative sophistication of the trim does confirm that skilled craftsmen were at work in Vicksburg during its earliest period. Tradition states that the house was the home of Rev. John Lane who, as the son-in-law and executor of the state of Newitt Vick, is considered the "co-founder" of Vicksburg.

This building was individually listed on the National Register on 6 May 1982 from a nomination prepared by MDAH chief architectural historian William C. Allen. It was later included as element #33 in the Uptown Vicksburg Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 19 August 1993, and it was more recently included as element #35 in the Uptown Vicksburg Amendment and Boundary Increase No. 2, which was added to the National Register on 4 February 2020.

It is included in "Mississippi Valley Architecture" (1984) (p. 76) and "Historic Vicksburg Walking Tour Guide" (#28, pp. 22-23).
