Designed by architect Xavier A. Kramer and built in 1917-18, the Stone County Courthouse is the most architecturally prominent building in the county.
Brief Description
Two-story, frame, five-bay-wide (www-ww-wddw-ww-ww) Eclectic courthouse. Bay 3 is an inset entry featuring a pair of 9-light/1-panel doors with a 27-light transom and multiple light sidelights. Windows are 1/1 and 6/1 wood d-h-s in singles and ribbons of three. Decorative features include distinctive brick work, large stepped brackets, and pilasters. The building has a pier foundation, brick and stucco cladding, and a low pitched mansard tile and flat roof.The building has been enlarged to almost twice its original size including an integrated extension of the core building (east elevation) as well as the addition of two flat roof wings on the left and right (north and south) elevations.

There is also a War Memorial on the Courthouse site constructed sometime after the Vietnam War.

Historic Information
The Courthouse's construction totaled $29,515.18 in 1918. The Standard Construction Company was based in Meridian, MS.

The building received a 2002 Community Heritage Preservation Grant of $200,000 and a congressionally-earmarked "Save America’s Treasures" grant of $250,000 in 2003. The renovation of the building was completed in September 2004. A total of $2.4 million dollars was utilized to renovate and construct additions to the courthouse.
