Brief Description
This is a modest, 1-story, side-gabled, brick building on a brick pier foundation and 2 chimneys that pierce the asphalt shingle roof on the north and south elevations. The façade (E) features a 6-panel door under a 4-light transom. The windows are 12/12 double-hung wood sash with 6-paneled shutters. A 1934 gabled addition projects from the southern portion of façade on the original building, creating an L-shape. This addition has 6/6 double-hung wood sash windows and a 6-paneled door on the northern elevation
Historic Information
This small brick building supposedly served as the county courthouse from 1848 to 1876 (when Magnolia became the county seat), but its small size suggests that it was a county clerk’s office rather than a courthouse. The building was enlarged in 1934 when a wing was added under the sponsorship of the DAR. It was renovated somewhat in 1974. It was proposed for the National Register in 1979, but was not approved for nomination at that time.
