The Holy Innocents Episcopal Church derives its significance from its architectural character, being one of the most sophisticated of the few Carpenter Gothic style churches remaining in Mississippi. Also the church was built by Andrew Johnson, a prolific and creative north Mississippi contractor and architect of the late-19th century. It was Listed on the National Register on 5 November 1987, and was later included as a “previously listed” element (element #36 in the Como Commercial Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 10 July 2008. It is included in the "Inventory of the Church Archives of Mississippi – Protestant Episcopal Church – Diocese of Mississippi" (1940) (#73, pp. 94-95), "Old Homes of Mississippi, Volume II: Columbus and the North" (1977) (pp. 129-130), and "Historic Churches of Mississippi" (2007) (pp. 40-41). |
