Context/Comments

Built in 1905-06 to serve as the U.S. Post Office for Natchez, this building was designed and built under the direction of James Knox Taylor (1857-1929), Supervising Architect of the Treasury from 1897 to 1912. It was enlarged in 1935. It ceased to be used as the post office after the present post office at 214 Canal Street (001-NAT-0022) was built in 1967.

The building is now the location of the Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture. The museum was established in the 1990s by the Natchez Association for the Preservation of African American Culture (NAPAC).
