This church is signficant for its architectural rarity in Mississippi as a Federal Style brick church and for its close association with the history of its community. Jefferson College utilized the building for its commencement exercises, and it was used for lectures during the 1830s by the Jefferson College and the Washington Lyceum. Today, it is the only historic church surviving in the once-thriving village of Washington. The building was listed on the National Register on 4 September 1986. It has been designated as United Methodist Church Historic Site No. 47. It is included in "Shrines to Tomorrow" (1971), "Historic Churches of Mississippi" (2007) (p. 111), and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (pp. 54-55, in the listing for Meadvilla).
