Chartered on February 17, 1818, the Elizabeth Female Academy was located at Washington, Mississippi, six miles east of Natchez. Named in honor of Mrs. Elizabeth Roach, who donated the land to the Methodist Conference of Mississippi, the school operated until 1845. Elizabeth Female Academy was the first charted institution for the higher education of young women in the South, and one of the earliest in the United States. The site is owned by the National Park Service, as part of the property of the Natchez Trace Parkway. The site of Elizabeth Female Academy was listed on the National Register on 6 May 1977. |
