From Mississippi Landmark Significance Report, January 8, 2014, by Jennifer Baughn, MDAH: The gymnasium is highly intact and has been renovated and put back into use. The form is a typical standardized plan: the tall gabled playing floor space is flanked on both sides by sheds covering the bleachers. A small ticket booth remains on the front (N) façade, and pent roofs cover the two entrances to the bleacher areas. On the interior, this gym boasts decorative treatment unique in the state in the form of hand-painted advertising on the walls laid out similar to a newspaper advertising page of the time. The original painter left his own name, “Signs by John H. Ladd, Harperville, 1950” and his son, John H. Ladd, Jr., added his name in 2010 after painting a few new signs on the north wall to recognize the efforts of volunteers during the renovation. One line of wood bleachers has been removed on the west wall, but the east wall bleachers remain. |
