According to cemetery records the earliest unmarked grave, E. Meggs, May 15, 1815, and the earliest marked grave, Powhatten Robertson, 1821, were moved to this location after their original burial ground began to erode away. Since its consecration, over 2000 individuals have been laid to rest within its boundaries. Markers are made of marble, granite, concrete, and bronze and range from mausoleums, box tombs, head and foot stones, and plaques. There is a high concentration of Woodman markers in this cemetery due to the fact that there were many members living in the Bay. The second, middle portion of the cemetery was deeded to the City of Bay St. Louis on September 3, 1888 in an exchange of property with St. Luke's Church for the now vacant old burial ground. The last portion of the land was given to the City by Joan N. Seal on November 20, 1891. The cemetery is still active and represents the growth of Bay St. Louis from the early nineteenth century to today. |
