Brownlee Hall was built in 1947 as the gymnasium for Tougaloo College. It was included as a contributing element (element #6) in the Tougaloo Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 31 August 1998. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark, at the request of Tougaloo College, on 14 August 2001, in order to render it eligible for the receipt of state Museum Grant funding that year. Despite the development of plans for the preservation of the building between 2001 and 2006, the structural condition of the building worsened. It was demolished in 2011. |
