| The three World War II hangars at the Madison Airport (Bruce Campbell Field) were built in 1940 for the Mississippi Institute of Aeronautics, a private flight school operated under contract to the War Department to train military pilots. They are significant in the area of Military History because they are the best surviving examples in Mississippi of the facilities built for training military pilots during World War II. The buildings also have architectural significance as some of the most intact surviving examples in Mississippi of the prefabricated metal aircraft hangars that were typical of these aviation training facilities. This group of three aircraft hangars was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 2 April 1998, and was listed on the National Register on 25 August 2005. They are included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 232, JM11). |
