"Glenfield" (formerly "Glencannon") is distinctive among the antebellum suburban estate residences of Natchez in having a Gothic Revival design. According to the National Register nomination, it is also notable for "its high degree of architectural integrity, which includes the survival of its original interior decorative scheme." There is evidence that the house as it stands today was a remodeling or an enlargement of an earlier house, but it acquired its present form and appearance soon after 1851, when it became the home of William Cannon and his wife Jane Ship Cannon, who named it "Glencannon." In 1880, the house was purchased by Osborne K. Field, who renamed the property "Glenfield." This house was listed on the National Register on 8 February 1990, with 148.15 acres of surrounding land. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark, at owner request, on 12 January 2006. It is included in "Old Homes of Mississippi, Volume I: Natchez and the South" (1977) (pp. 43-44) and "Natchez Images, 1880-1960" (2002) (p. 52). |
