The old Madison County Jail is among the most outstanding and best-preserved nineteenth-century penal facilities extant in Mississippi. It is also significant as an example of post-Civil War architecture, exhibiting both domestic and institutional characteristics of the period. The jail was constructed by Valentine Warner under the supervision of architect C.W. Oates at a cost of $25,000. It was individually listed on the National Register on 28 March 1979, and was later included as a “previously listed” element (element #106) in the East Canton Historic District, which was placed on the National Register on 13 April 1998. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 19 June 2020. This building is included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p. 230, JM6). |
