Context/Comments
Designed by R.H. Hunt & Company, Shattuck Hall was built in 1910-11 as a dormitory & dining hall.

It was listed as a contributing element (element #506) in the South Columbus Historic District, which was placed on the National Register in 1982. When that district was resurveyed and enlarged as the South Columbus Historic District Amendment No. 2 (which was added to the National Register 29 September 2021) this building was included in the enlarged district as element #453 (previously listed/contributing). It was designated a Mississippi Landmark in 2017. (It had not been designated in 1986 -- at the same time as many buildings at MUW were designated as Mississippi landmarks -- because of substantial alterations made in 1959-60 following a fire in 1953, but it has maintained its architectural character from the remodeling for over fifty years.)

Brief Description
Two-story, u-plan academic building clad in brick veneer siding with hipped-roof covered with asphalt shingles. Main facade faces west and is nine-bay symmetrical (WW-DD-WW-WW-DD-WW-WW-DD-WW). A full-height pedimented portico projects in front of the central three bays. The pediment is adorned with a dentil course cornice and is supported by Corinthian columns on brick pedestals with concrete caps. Brick porch deck. Most windows are paired 4/4 wood DHS. Central entry consists of twinned doors with single light flanked by three-light sidelights over paneled bulkheads with 10-light transom above. The side entrances are also paired doors flanked by three-light sidelights, but have five-light transoms. Extending in front of the auxiliary entries are flat-roof porticos supported by Doric columns. Dentil course cornice below roof.
Historic Information
Erected in 1910-11 at an initial cost of $25,000 for use as a dormitory & dining hall. Originally a four-story building, but was heavily damaged by fire in 1953, and subsequently reconfigured as a two-story building in 1959-1960. First floor housed kitchen and dining hall until new cafeteria was opened in 1969. The second floor continued to serve as a dormitory until 1971. Housed Nursing Division from 1975 to 1983. New roof added in 1978. The building was temporarily vacated in the mid-1980's, but was renovated in 1998.
