Columbus Hall is architecturally significant as an example of Queen Anne style architecture used for a large institutional building and as the central structure in the front campus complex.

It was listed as a contributing element (element #498) in the South Columbus Historic District, which was placed on the National Register in 1982. When that district was resurveyed and enlarged as the South Columbus Historic District Amendment No. 2 (which was added to the National Register 29 September 2021) this building was included in the enlarged district as element #450 (previously listed/contributing). It was designated a Mississippi Landmark in 1986.

Columbus Hall is included in "The State of Mississippi – Historic Properties" (1982) (p. 16) and "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (p.188, in the listing for Mississippi University for Women, PR32).

Brief Description
Columbus Hall is a four-story brick dormitory built from local contributions in 1896. It is a Queen Anne style building with 3.5 stories on a raised basement and hipped roof. A polygonal corner turret with a conical roof and finial ends the facade. Horizontal limestone banding. It originally contained 46 bedrooms. It is connected with Callaway and Orr Chapel by wooden covered walkways and is an integral part of the striking architecture of the historic front campus.
Historic Information
Constructed in 1896 as a 46-room dorm for approximately 100 students. Columbus Hall was used as a dorm until 1970, when it was closed due to deterioration. It would remain closed until 2001-02 when the building was restored and converted into 60 apartment style suites at a cost of $3.1 million. A new roof was installed in 2015.
