Designed by architects N.W. Overstreet and A.H. Town, the North Church Street Primary School (now the Church Street Elementary School) was built in 1936-38. It was individually listed on the National Register in 1992 (as a component of the Historic Resources of Tupelo Multiple Property Submission), and it was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 27 July 1992.

This building is included in "Buildings of Mississippi" (2020) (pp. 168-169, NE19).

Brief Description
This 2-story Art Moderne school is concrete construction with a flat roof. The rear elevation is utilitarian in design, characteristic of the International style, where as the front (east) reflects the dramatic Art Moderne design. The horizontality of the design is broken only by the vertical entry block. The school is built into a bank, as such, the front appears to be only one-story. The front façade features a curved baby with a bank of hinged windows; a round window; and a mssive, square, projecting bay which contains the recessed, tripartite entrance. This bay has a reeded entryway and chamfered corners. Steps leading to this bay are flanked by buttresses displaying carvings of animal and human figures. The most frequently occuring windows are rows of aluminum sash.
