This bridge, although it fits no known type, was strongly influenced by Fink and Stearns trusses. This example is the only one like it in MIssissippi. Its rarity on a national level is emphasized by the fact that no similar examples were observed in the bridge survey reports for Georgia, Ohio, and Virginia, despite its having been built by a Virginia firm. It is significant in that it is an example of a rare type of truss construction. It was designated a Mississippi Landmark on 4 August 1987. It was listed on the National Register on 16 November 1988, as one of the components of the "Historic Bridges of Mississippi," a thematic group nomination prepared by Jack Elliott, historical archaeologist of MDAH. |
